King Charles III Privy Council Gazette Notice

The Privy Council held its first meeting since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II who died on the 8th September 2022 at Balmoral. This meeting was the first privy council meeting that Charles would attend as King Charles III and be the proclaimed king in front of an accession council.

King Charles III Sovereign Coins

King Charles III sovereign coins that are dated 2023 will all have the same design on the five pound, two-pound, sovereign, half-sovereign, and quarter sovereign gold coins. For the obverse our effigy with the inscription "· CHARLES III · DEI · GRA · REX · FID · DEF", the reverse features the Royal Coat of Arms with the year date. The Sovereign coins will have either a plain or grained edge.

  • Five Pound Coin - Diameter is 36.02mm.
  • Two Pound Coin - Diameter is 28.4mm.
  • Sovereign Gold Coin - Diameter is 22.05mm.
  • Half-Sovereign Gold Coin - Diameter is 19.03mm.
  • Quarter-Sovereign Gold Coin - Diameter is 13.5mm and a millesimal fineness of 916.66.

We could expect to see a similar Royal Coat of Arms design to the one that appeared on the 2022 sovereign that was created by Timothy Noad.

Queen Elizabeth II Memorial £5 coins

The Queen Elizabeth II memorial £5 coins feature the new King Charles III portrait, designed by the famous British sculptor, Martin Jennings FRBS. The obverse of the coin illustrates the effigy, with the following inscription "· CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 5 POUNDS ·" and the date of the year. The reverse of the memorial coin features two portraits of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II with her Royal Cypher and the inscription: "ELIZABETH REGINA 1926-2022". The silver and gold versions of the coin have an edge inscription which reads as: "· ELIZABETH II · DEVOTED TO YOUR SERVICE". The cupro-nickel coin version has a grained edge.

Queen Elizabeth II Memorial 50p Coins

The design of the fifty pence gold, standard silver, silver piedfort, platinum and cupro-nickel coins feature the inscription that reads as: CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 50 PENCE. The reverse has the four quarterings of our Royal Arms contained in a shield, a rose, a thistle, a sprig of Shamrock, in centre of crown and date of year.

Queen Elizabeth II 15kg Memorial Coins

The obverse of the coins has the inscription that reads as:  CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 15000 POUNDS·" and the date of the year. The reverse features the portrait of the majesty Queen Elizabeth II and includes the inscription" · ELIZABETH REGINA 1926- 2022·".
