Synopsis

During the Privy Council meeting held on May 17th, 2023, an array of thrilling coin releases were announced, including the newest addition to the Royal Mint's Music Legends Series - The Police and/or Dame Shirley Bassey Coins, Star Wars Coins, New King Charles III Coronation Coins, Silver King Charles III Royal Arms £5 Coin, and ADA Lovelace Innovation in Science Coins.

The Police and/or Dame Shirley Bassey Coins

During the May 2023 Privy Council Meeting, an exciting new Royal Mint Music Legends series of coins was unveiled, featuring designs inspired by the Police and/or Dame Shirley Bassey. This captivating collection offers a diverse range of options, including gold, silver coins, and cupro-nickel pieces.

The reverse of these coins feature ONE of the following:

  • (a) A depiction of the silhouettes of the three members of The Police accompanied by the inscription “THE POLICE”. 
  • (b) A depiction of the silhouette of Dame Shirley Bassey accompanied by the inscription “DAME SHIRLEY BASSEY” and the song titles “GOLDFINGER”, “MOONRAKER” and “DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER”.

New Royal Mint King Charles III Coronation Coins

On the 6th of May 2023, King Charles III and his wife, Camilla, were coronated as the King and Queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth nations, following the passing of his mother, Elizabeth II, on September 8th, 2022, thereby assuming his role as the new monarch.

The Privy Council has announced the imminent release of the Silver King Charles III Royal Arms £5 Coin, featuring an obverse design that showcases the effigy of Charles III with the inscription "CHARLES III D.G. REX F.D. 5 POUNDS" and the year, accompanied by a distinctive reverse design.

The reverse of this coin features the following:

  • A depiction of three lions passant guardant, being that quartering of Our Royal Arms known heraldically as England and the inscription “FIVE POUNDS"

Ada Lovelace Innovation in Science Coins

Ada Lovelace, born in 1815, was an influential British mathematician and writer, widely regarded as the world's first computer programmer. Collaborating with Charles Babbage on his Analytical Engine, Lovelace went beyond mere calculations, conceptualising the potential of the machine and pioneering the concept of programming. Her visionary ideas on algorithmic thinking laid the foundation for modern computing. In recognition of her remarkable achievements, Ada Lovelace will be honored as the seventh individual in the Royal Mint's Innovation of Science Coin Series. This prestigious series celebrates the exceptional contributions of UK leaders in scientific innovation, paying tribute to Lovelace's lasting impact on computer science.

The reverse of these coins feature the following:

  •  A depiction of computer punch cards accompanied by the inscription “ADA LOVELACE COMPUTER VISIONARY 1815-1852 A DISCOVERER OF THE HIDDEN REALITIES OF NATURE”
  • The coins shall have a grained edge and in incuse letters the inscription “· INNOVATION IN SCIENCE · LOVELACE” save for the gold coin where the incuse letters shall be accompanied by a plain edge.
