Background of The Sovereign
Step back in time to the late 15th century, where the English sovereign emerges as a British gold masterpiece. In the year 1489, under the reign of King Henry VII, this coin made its debut. Created by the skilled hand of German engraver Alexander of Bruchsal, the sovereign's obverse depicted the mighty King in his regal coronation robes, seated upon his majestic throne.
Fast forward to the 19th century, and the modern rendition of the British gold sovereign comes into being. The year 1817 marked its official inception, striking under the rule of King George III. Today, the vast majority of these iconic British sovereigns proudly display Benedetto Pistrucci's renowned design on the reverse - a captivating depiction of St. George valiantly slaying the fearsome dragon. Over the course of history, this image has graced the sovereign, accompanied by the faces of various monarchs who have ruled the British Empire.
In a notable turn of events, following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the sovereign now bears the likeness of His Majesty King Charles III on its obverse side. This transition is evident in British bullion and coinage over recent years, including the 2022 memorial sovereigns, the regal 2023 Coronation sovereigns, and the new 2024 sovereign range.
The 2024 Sovereign Coin Specification
These 2024 sovereigns continue to be one of the most popular ways to invest in gold in Britain. They are exempt from Capital Gains Tax, which means you won't have to pay any tax on the profits you make from these coins. Another significant selling point of these new 2024 sovereigns is that they are the first bullion and proof sovereign coins to feature the uncrowned portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by Martin Jennings.
On the reverse side of the coin, investors and collectors can expect to be greeted by the iconic St. George and the Dragon reverse design. The 2024 sovereign bullion coins were officially launched on January 9, 2024.
