Synopsis

During the Privy Council meeting held on 14th June 2023, a range of exciting coin releases were announced, which included the latest addition to the Royal Mint's Tudor Beasts Series: King Charles III 75th Birthday Coins, Robin Hood Myths & Legends Coins, Mary Seacole £5 Crown Coins, and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and/or Snowman and the Boy 50p Coins.

Seymour Unicorn and/or Tudor Dragon Coins

During the June 2023 Privy Council Meeting, a new Royal Mint Tudor Beasts coin was announced. This coin will showcase one of the 10 Heraldic Statues which line the moat at Hampton Court Palace. The collection will provide a variety of choices, including gold, silver, and cupro-nickel coins.

The reverse of these coins feature ONE of the following:

  • (a) A depiction of the Seymour Unicorn accompanied by the inscription “· SEYMOUR UNICORN ·”
  • (b) A depiction of the Tudor Dragon accompanied by the inscription “· TUDOR DRAGON ·”

£2 Silver Coin Plain Edge Inscription

The coin shall have a plain edge and in incuse letters the inscription “· HAMPTON COURT PALACE · ROYAL TUDOR BEASTS”.

Overview of the Tudor Beasts Series

Following on from the successful Queen’s Beasts range, the Royal Mint announced the release of The Tudor Beasts series. The Tudor Beasts, sometimes called the King's Beasts, are the 10 heraldic statues that represent the ancestry of King Henry VIII and his third wife Jane Seymour.

What Are the 10 Heraldic Statues?

Originally a medieval tradition, King Henry VII began to use heraldic symbols as a way to reinforce his position on the throne. His son Henry VIII continued this tradition and many of these Tudor Beasts, are on display at one of Henry VIII’s favourite residences, Hampton Court Palace.

King Charles III 75th Birthday Coins

Buckingham Palace has officially confirmed that King Charles III will celebrate his official birthday on 17th June, while his actual birth date is 14th November. This year's celebration promises to be a momentous occasion as it marks his 75th birthday, with commemorative coins being released to honor this special event.

The reverse features the following:

A depiction of a floral arrangement surrounding Our Royal Cypher, the number 75 and the inscription “HIS MAJESTY KING CHARLES III 1948 2023”.

Robin Hood Myths & Legends Coins

Robin Hood is set to be featured on a new Myths and Legends coin! Interestingly, this is not his first appearance in the series, as he was featured on the 2021 coins. It is possible that the reverse of the new coin will showcase an updated design. In 2023, the Robin Hood 10-ounce silver bullion coin was released, marking a two-year gap since the initial 2021-dated coins were released. The 10-ounce coin displayed the year 2023 (instead of 2021) and retained the original Jody Clark reverse design.

Robin Hood has been a part of British folklore since the 13th century.The legend of the skilled archer who was known to steal from the rich to give to the poor has been passed down through generations.

Myths and Legends is a series of gold & silver bullion coins by the Royal Mint that feature some of the most legendary mythical beings ever! A depiction of Mary Seacole set against a background of the Union flag and the inscription “MARY SEACOLE”. Additionally, these coins will feature a plain edge with the engraved inscription "· THE ONE WHO NURSED HER SICK" in recessed letters. The cupro-nickel coins will have a grained edge.
